Morning all,
For most areas adequate chill has been received for several crops. I am seeing early bud movement in almonds (expect to see some flowering this week but this may be tempered by the burst of very cold weather coming later this week after the predicted rain on Monday and Tuesday), as well as some early pink bud in pomegranates (a very low chill variety plant).
I am going to collate the past data into one graph for comparative purposes but if comparing 24 to 25 the bid difference was that 24 had an early start to chill accumulation. I am very interested to see how sites pollinate that undertook no defoliation and enforced dormancy fare this season in terms of fruit set.
This will be a year when not only total chill hour accumulation will be important but the time that has been accumulated over, as we were 3-4 weeks later in starting chill accumulation compared to our better yielding seasons. The other aspect to consider is that chill does equal shape and size of product through stronger flower development and pollination.
